From craftsmanship to cuisine: Peru brings authentic experiences to ITB Berlin

María del Sol Velásquez García, Tourism Promotion Director at the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERU), explains the special Peruvian attractions in store for ITB Berlin attendees and the array of tourism segments the destination is promoting.

What is Peru presenting at ITB Berlin this year? What can visitors experience on your stand?
Visitors have the opportunity to witness Peruvian craftsmanship at our stand, with live demonstrations by two talented artisans. Attendees can admire the artistry of Shipibo-Conibo designs and the weaving technique of the Chinchero’s textiles. Our stand also features a life-sized alpaca, a striking element of the Peruvian highlands. And, Peruvian gastronomy takes centre stage, offering visitors the chance to savour the country’s finest flavours.

What are the main tourism segments Peru is looking to promote on a global scale?
The main tourism segments we’re currently promoting are adventure, culture, nature, and gastronomy. Peru’s rich history draws those eager to immerse themselves in the country’s ancient heritage, while its diverse geography offers opportunities for ecotourism and adventure across the Peruvian Amazon, the Andes, and the Pacific coast. Complementing these offerings, our cuisine allows travellers to immerse themselves in a renowned culinary tradition.

How is Peru working to make its tourism offering more sustainable?
Our country has been internationally recognised for its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. In June 2024, Machupicchu renewed its carbon-neutral certification and five Peruvian destinations were included in the Top 100 Stories list of Green Destinations. We also promote community-based tourism rooted in each region’s living culture and unique natural surroundings.
