Hokkaido shines the spotlight on adventure travel

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is showcasing its growing appeal as an adventure travel destination at ITB China 2025.

Roughly the size of Austria, the island features seven national parks, including the newly designated Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park (June 2024). Iconic sites such as the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range, Lake Toya, and UNESCO-listed Shiretoko Peninsula underline Hokkaido’s potential for nature-based travel.

Building on this remarkable natural environment, Hokkaido has developed a series of guided adventure tours launched in September 2024. Supervised and accompanied by certified local guides, the tours include experiences such as cycling on Rishiri Island, night tours on the Shakotan Peninsula, winter fat biking near the Taushubetsu “phantom bridge”, and Ainu cultural forest walks in Biratori.

The Hokkaido Government has implemented a dedicated certification system to ensure guide quality and safety, aligning with international standards. Tour operators seeking unique, immersive programs will find in Hokkaido a compelling, year-round offer for today’s experiential travellers.
